- Sqwélqwel means “true news”. It refers to the oral history of our ancestors and the places they fished, hunted, harvested, and spent time in our world. Every Stό:lō person has their own sqwelqwel. Just as sxwōxwiyám links us to things and places of long ago, sqwélqwel links us to the more recent past. Once we know our sqwélqwel, we have a responsibility to use the places our ancestors used. Once we use these places, it becomes our responsibility to take care of them. Taking care of the places in our sqwélqwel means protecting them so they can provide for our future generations.
- The First Peoples’ Cultural Council is excited to launch the First Peoples’ Map, an interactive online map that provides information about the Indigenous languages, cultures and places of British Columbia. The map can be used to view language regions and First Nations place names, search for community landmarks, listen to audio pronunciations of languages, places, greetings and more. The First Peoples’ Map has been built for First Nations in B.C. and is a living map. To get started, visit the map, click on a language or place and listen to the voices of language speakers in that region.
