Our Cedar Roots leadership students will visit the Katzie First Nation community to learn how to smoke salmon on February 6, 2020. We will meet at South Bonson Community Centre (10932 Barnston View Rd) at 8:30 am on Thursday morning and will be leaving the South Bonson Centre at 2:40pm. This event supports the goals in our Local Education Enhancement Agreement for Aboriginal students. Students will learn about the history and traditions of the Katzie First Nation people, the importance of salmon and salmon spawning cycles, and the history and process of smoking salmon.
Plan for the day:
8:30am: Arrive at South Bonson Centre
8:45am: Workshop with Jay Bailey – Katzie History
10:00am: Snack break/walk to the Katzie Health and Community Center
10:30am: Smoked Salmon workshop
12:30pm: Lunch

Students will need to organize transportation to and from South Bonson Community Centre. There is no cost for this trip. Please bring a bagged lunch. It is requested that students wear old clothes that they do not mind getting dirty and that will prepare them for a full day outdoors. If students have a fileting knife or filet glove at home, they are welcome to bring it with them. Students need to heed the instruction of adults and use proper safety equipment to minimize risk.
There are a limited number of spaces available. Students are responsible for connecting with their classroom teachers to recieve any work that they will miss due to this field trip.
The group will be supervised by Jessica Knott, Amelia Laidlaw, and Jay Bailey. Please feel free to contact Jessica Knott via email (Jessica_knott@sd42.ca) or phone (778-840-7752) if you have any questions.
