Our Cedar Roots leadership students will be exploring Mount Seymour on February 24, 2020. We will be leaving Westview Secondary at 8:30 am on Monday morning and will be returning to Westview Secondary at approximately 4:00pm. This event supports the goals in our Local Education Enhancement Agreement for Aboriginal students. Students will learn about winter safety, survival and preparedness, participate in team survival scenarios, and how to build an emergency shelter. Students will also learn about connections to the local First Nations communities, traditional plant use and environmental sustainability through an Indigenous lens.
Plan for the day:
8:30am: Leave Westview Secondary
9:45am: Arrive at Mount Seymour – Safety Orientation
10:00am: Workshop one: Sustainability on the Snow
12:30am: Bagged lunch
1:00pm: Workshop two: Winter Survival
3:00pm: Leave Mount Seymour
4:00pm: Pick up at Westview Secondary
Transportation to and from Mount Seymour will be provided via bus. There is no cost for this trip. Please bring a bagged lunch. Although there is a lodge, we will not be stopping to purchase food. Snowshoeing is an aerobic activity. When snowshoeing, you work hard and you perspire. By dressing in layers, you can monitor your body temperature. Please refer to the attached clothing list – it is important that you wear insulating warm socks, gloves or mittens, and a hat or toque. Clothing must be suitable for being outside all day. Students need to heed the instruction of adults and use proper safety equipment to minimize risk.
There are a limited number of spaces available. Students are responsible for connecting with their classroom teachers to recieve any work that they will miss due to this field trip.
The group will be supervised by Jessica Knott, Amelia Laidlaw, and staff from Mount Seymour. Please feel free to contact Jessica Knott via email (Jessica_knott@sd42.ca) or phone (778-840-7752) if you have any questions.
